Important information about the level of contextualisation required for learning and assessment

Please note that, because of state and territory variations to legislation, codes of practice and NCC requirements, as well as variations in access to materials and tools and equipment between RTOs, it is difficult to provide plans and specs or specific projects within our assessments.

The assessments may therefore require a higher level of RTO contextualisation than you might expect from, say, a BSB or IT unit. For example, in some instances you will be required to provide plans and specs that match the project the students will be required to complete. In others, students will need access to project documentation that reflects the simulated live site environment they will be learning and assessed within and you may need to update marking guidance accordingly.

About this qualification

Workers with this qualification have tradesperson-level skills in the manufacture and/or installation of products, including furniture and cabinetry, made from timber and other materials.

They have core skills in tool use, measuring, drawing (including computer-aided design), interpreting work documentation, preparing cutting lists, communication, teamwork, and safe and environmentally sustainable work practices. They may have specialised skills in wood machining, cabinet and furniture making, kitchen and bathroom construction and installation, marine cabinetry, coopering or drafting.

Work is in a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader activities involving established routines, methods and procedures, where some discretion and judgement is required in the selection of equipment, services or contingency measures. Individuals collaborate with others to achieve quality outcomes and take responsibility for their own work. They may have some limited responsibility for the work of others.

Kitchen and bathroom installers must be licensed in some states, and induction training is required for those working on construction sites.

Trainer Guides

The Furnishing Works Trainer Guides provide training content, student activities, delivery resources, links to videos, further reading and additional material to help guide delivery. Each Trainer Guide also includes end of chapter questions and assessment checkpoints – a self-reflection guide for students to check their readiness for assessment.

Trainer Guide Mapping

A detailed Trainer Guide Mapping is included for each unit of competency. It shows how each unit of competency is addressed by the Trainer Guide.

Student Guides

For practical, hands-on units, content is provided by way of demonstration, videos, practical tasks, further reading and class discussions. For the ‘human skills’ and more theory-based units, the Student Guide provides learning content, activities, links to videos and further reading, and additional material to support learning. Assessment checkpoints are provided for each unit of competency and the student is directed to the appropriate assessment workbook to complete their assessment when they are ready.

Assessor Workbook

Assessor Workbooks provide assessment tasks, observation checklists, templates, supporting documents and marking guidance for each unit of competency. They also provide unit-specific advice on delivering assessment. They are designed for use with students who are being assessed in the workplace or simulated workplace (or classroom for some units).

Assessment Mapping

Mapping is provided as a separate document to show how each unit of competency is mapped to each assessment task.

Student Workbook

Student Workbooks provide students with assessment tasks, checklists and guidance on gathering evidence for each unit of competency. They also provide important information relating to completing training and assessment. They are designed to provide a clear and straightforward way for them to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a workplace or simulated workplace setting.

Supporting resources

The Furnishing Works series also comes with some supporting resources.

Simulation Guide

The furnishing industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or very closely simulated workplace environment and this qualification requires that units of competency be delivered in this context.

We have developed this guide to support those of you who are delivering this course to students who do not have the benefit of access to a workplace for the purposes of learning and assessment.

It includes:

  • ideas for creating a simulated workplace
  • suggestions for providing access to real-life industry environments
  • safety information for students working in a simulated construction environment
  • a list of the plans, specifications and documents that students will need access to throughout the qualification and how and when they will be used for each unit
  • sample workplace procedures and forms
  • links to information that will be useful for meeting the assessment conditions for each unit.
Toolboxes

Toolboxes provide key information, templates and forms for trainers, assessors and students. Instead of repeating this information across every unit in the series, we provide it in this one, handy document.
